THE VOLTERRAIO TRAIL

Towards a jewel standing between history and nature

Duration: 80 min. (round trip)
Route: 190 m elevation gain, uneven terrain
Difficulty: medium
Trail map: No. 255 of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park
Guide: Antonello Marchese (photographer and naturalistic author)
Starting point: Le Casermette parking area, Road to Volterraio

This is one of the most fascinating trails on Elba. The journey begins through the landscapes of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, where nature and millennia of history intertwine. The destination is the majestic Fortress of Volterraio, a jewel set in the rock at 395 meters above sea level. The first stone was laid by the Etruscans, who built a watchtower. But it was the Maritime Republic of Pisa that transformed it into the impregnable fortress that still today welcomes visitors with breathtaking views of Elba and the surrounding islands. At sunset, the colors of the sky reflect on the sea, offering an unforgettable spectacle.

BOOK YOUR ADVENTURE

Practical Tips for Trekking

  • Wear sturdy boots with non-slip soles and enough ankle support
  • Bring a windbreaker, especially for higher altitudes
  • Pack a lightweight backpack with water, energy snacks, and a detailed map (in case your phone battery dies)
  • Include a small first aid kit for minor accidents
  • Don’t forget binoculars to admire wildlife from a distance

Walk Responsibly

  • Keep the trails clean; take your trash back to your hotel and dispose of it properly
  • Choose a reusable water bottle over single-use plastic bottles
  • Do not disturb wildlife; observe it in its natural habitat
  • Do not pick plants or flowers
  • Do not smoke; even a spark can endanger an entire natural area
  • Respect information signs and the rules of the National Park
